The Birkbeck Department of Psychological Sciences was ranked fifth in the UK for the quality of its research in the 2008 RAE, with 25% of research activity rated world-leading (4*) and 45% rated internationally excellent (3*). it is home to such major research centres as the Centre for Brain and Cognitive Development (CBDB), a world leader in investigating the neural and genetic basis of human mental abilities, and the Institute for the Study of Children, families and Social Issues  (ISCFSI), a high-profile centre for basic and applied research on the development, functioning and well-being of children and families. The research training is inherently multi-disciplinary, reflecting the ESRC’s Strategic Challenge to integrate the insights and methods of contemporary biology and medical sciences with those of the social sciences in seeking to understand individual behaviour.
