The Institute of Education (IOE) specialises in research, consultancy and teaching in education and related areas of social science and professional practice and is one of the world’s leading schools for education and social sciences. In the 2008 RAE it had the highest proportion of world-leading research activity in the filed of education. The IOE undertakes around a quarter of all funded education research carried out in UK universities and is consistently ranked first or second for social science research funding among higher education institutions.

IOE is the lead institution for the Education and Quantitative Methods clusters and shares the Social Policy cluster with LSHTM.


Birkbeck, University of London


bbk_logoBirkbeck is a multi-disciplinary university with programmes in humanities, sciences and social sciences. It has a wide range of Masters and research degrees, with 80% of its research rated as internationally important. It is unique in its portfolio of part-time degrees and other courses. All of its undergraduate degrees are through part-time study and most of its postgraduate research students are studying part-time, creating a mature learning environment where the majority of students have work experience.

Birkbeck is the lead institution for the Economics and Psychology clusters and shares the Politics cluster with SOAS.

Entirely postgraduate, LSHTM is one of the highest-rated research institutions in the UK (ranked third in the Times Higher Education table of excellence, based on the 2008 RAE) and in 2009 it won the prestigious Gates Award for Global Health. Its wide-ranging disciplinary and subject expertise includes anthropology, health economics, quantitative analysis, social epidemiology and environmental health.

LSHTM is the lead institution in the Demography and Health and Well-Being clusters and shares the Social Policy cluster with IOE.


SOAS, University of London

It enjoys a worldwide reputation for the quality of its teaching and research in aw and social sciences, arts and humanities, and languages and cultures, receiving a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher and Further Education in 2009. In the 2008 RAE, Asian Studies at SOAS was top-rated in the country. Anthropology and Politics were rated 70% and 60% ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ respectively.

SOAS is the lead institution in the International Development and Social Anthropology clusters and shares the Politics cluster with Birkbeck.
