Special lecture by leading political economist opens SOAS Development Studies-Bloomsbury DTC seminar series

On Tuesday 6 October the SOAS Department of Development Studies & Bloomsbury DTC for the Social Sciences seminar series was opened by a very special lecture by Professor Jayati Ghosh (Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India). Nearly 400 people crowded into SOAS’s biggest lecture theatre to hear Professor Ghosh talk on the timely topic of Are Emerging Markets Still Developing? And What is Development Anyway? The talk provoked a lively Twitter discussion on the meaning of development and impact of financial liberalisation on emerging economies.

Professor Ghosh is a distinguished development economist working on issues such as employment, gender, finance and the Indian economy. She has been described by the Guardian newspaper as one of the world’s leading economists and teaches at the Centre for Economic Studies and Planning, School of Social Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University. A video of her lecture is available on You Tube.

Photos of the event were taken by Bloomsbury DTC-funded SOAS student Jai Bhatia.

The lecture marked the first in a series of interdisciplinary seminars held jointly by the Bloomsbury DTC for the Social Sciences and SOAS Department of Development Studies. The series was partially funded by the DTC’s Interdisciplinary Competition and has been organised by SOAS PhD students (including DTC-funded students) and academic staff. As well as bringing together leading scholars to speak on a wide range of pressing issues in the social sciences, the seminars aim to enhance links between Bloomsbury institutions by involving discussants from across the DTC’s consortium of colleges.

The weekly seminar series will run throughout the first and second terms of the 2015/2016 academic year. A full listing for first term events is available on the SOAS Development Studies website. Other events in the series cover topics including the global food system, microfinance, socialism and human development, environmental justice and women’s empowerment.
